All about Search Engine Optimisation

[What is SEO?]  [Is SEO important?]  [PageRank™]  [Google Update Schedule

What is SEO?

Search Engine Optimisation is the art of ensuring that a particular page ranks well on any particular search engine for a given keyword or keyphrase. It really is as simple as that, although actually getting your site on top of search engine results and keeping it there can be an involved and long task.

Is SEO Important?

Search Engine optimisation can be the difference between a business succeeding and failing!
If you run a business online or need your website to generate interest in your products/services, try this simple test.

PageRank™

The Google PageRank™ is a numeric value that represents how important a page is on the internet. Google figures that when one page links to another page (whether on your site or on another site), it is effectively casting a vote for the other page. The more votes that are cast for a page, the more important the page must be.

The importance of the page that is casting the vote determines how important the vote itself is. Google calculates a page's importance from the votes cast for it. How important each vote is is taken into account when a page's PageRank™ is calculated.

PageRank™ is one of the key attributes that Google's uses to decide how far up their rankings a site should be.

So a good way of getting an improved position on a search engine is to get relevant (same theme) sites as yours to link to you. If these sites have a bigger PageRank™ than yours, your PageRank™ improves.

To see your own PageRank™ view your site whilst using the Google Toolbar.

Google Update Schedule

Google used to update it index on a regular basis, but this all stopped during 2004.
The Google Index (i.e. been able to be found on Google) is updated on a regular (almost daily basis), but your ranking is based on two main criteria:

So this means that after optimisation, you can expect a delay before any changes are noticed.
